About Word Guess

Word Guess belongs to a genre of daily word-guessing games that became a global phenomenon starting in 2021, when a simple, ad-free five-letter puzzle spread almost entirely by word of mouth and social sharing. The appeal is the same reason it's still popular now: the rules are learnable in one round, a single game takes two or three minutes, and the color-coded feedback turns pure guessing into a genuinely satisfying deduction puzzle.

Each round hides a secret 5-letter word. You get six guesses, and every valid 5-letter word you submit is checked against the answer letter by letter: a green tile means that letter is correct and in the right position, a yellow tile means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot, and a gray tile means the letter isn't in the word at all. The on-screen keyboard tracks every letter's best-known status as you play, so you can see at a glance which letters are still live options. Play in unlimited Practice mode for a fresh random word every round, or head to the Daily challenge for one puzzle shared by every player worldwide — same word, same day, with a shareable color-grid result you can post without spoiling the answer for anyone else.

How to Play

  1. 1Type or tap letters to build a 5-letter guess, then press Enter to submit it
  2. 2Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot
  3. 3Yellow means the letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot
  4. 4Gray means the letter isn't in the word at all
  5. 5Use the clues from each guess to narrow down the word within 6 tries

Tips & Strategy

  • Open with a word that has several common letters and at least two different vowels, like CRANE, ADIEU, or SLATE.
  • Use your first two guesses to test as many different letters as possible rather than repeating letters you already know are gray.
  • A yellow letter means it belongs in the word somewhere else — try it in a different position on your next guess rather than dropping it.
  • Watch for repeated letters: a word can contain the same letter twice, so don't rule that out once you've placed it once.
  • Narrow to the most common remaining letter pattern before guessing rare letters like Q, X, Z, or J.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guesses do I get?

Six. Each guess must be a valid 5-letter word, and you'll get green/yellow/gray feedback after every one.

What's the difference between Practice and Daily mode?

Practice mode gives you a new random word every time you play, unlimited times a day. Daily mode has one puzzle shared by every player worldwide, refreshing at midnight UTC, so everyone is solving the exact same word.

Can a word have repeated letters?

Yes — words like ERROR or LEVEL are valid answers, and the color feedback correctly accounts for repeated letters based on how many times that letter actually appears in the word.

Can I share my result without spoiling the word?

Yes — the Share Result button copies a color-coded emoji grid showing your guess pattern (green/yellow/gray squares) without revealing the actual letters, so you can share your result safely.
